Azores Airlines retired its last A310, and used the occasion to do some hooning before the old bird was put out to roost. This particular aircraft entered service with Swissair in 1983, and had been flying for Azores for 18 years. Aside from the music, this is a neat video from inside the cockpit and from the ground. Interestingly, the 310 has a central yoke, and not a side stick. And they must have been really leaning on it, cause it looks like quite a bumpy ride. This was the last A310 being flown by any carrier in Europe.

Gotta put some stress fractures in it for the next operator

With an A310, I tend to assume the next operator will be a boneyard of some type. I don’t think the aluminum recyclers care much about a little extra wear and tear.

It is always impressive to see cargo/passenger jets get hustled through the sky when they are unloaded and light on fuel. I always forget the power and capabilities it requires to carry the weight and people day in and day out.

Is this what it would be like to hoon a *insert any D odge performance product*?

But seriously, that was pretty neat to watch.

Those in-cockpit views really drive home the fact thay even flying an old  fat, out-of-date airliner is awesome, ‘cuz you know what? You’ re fuckin’ flying.

Great send off. I am sure every plane gets one of those before they get retired. Call me sentimental, but every machine that has been in use for a long time ends up growing a soul of it’s own.

The world war 2 planes that are still flying today? They might very well be alive at this point.

Well said. And it goes for vehicles, too. I am paying $3000 to get the transmission rebuilt in my 03 Odyssey. That van has carried our family literally all over the country, from the west coast, to the upper midwest, to the Dakotas, to the east coast. I can’t quite bear the thought of getting rid of it. So, so many memories.

It’s amazing how easily we can take such things for granted. Anyway:

This is now one of my favorite videos on the internet. One of my favorite flying videos of all time.

May have been quite windy, also. Lots of control input by the pilot when he’s l ow.

That pilot was looking kind of old and fat and out of date...

It just needs better music.

I think high winds are common in that part of the world. You see a lot of xwind landing videos from the Azores and Portugal.
